Retired Police as School Safety Officers: Burleson ISD's Innovative Approach

By Campus Contingency

School safety has always been a pivotal concern for educational institutions. With the challenges of meeting Texas school safety regulations, Burleson Independent School District has emerged as a beacon of innovation. Their model? Employing retired police officers as dedicated school safety officers.

Following the Uvalde school tragedy, the district swiftly recognized the importance of elementary school safety. Their unique solution not only elevated campus security but also bolstered community connections.

Unlike traditional school resource officers or private security, these school safety officers offer a distinct advantage. Their extensive police backgrounds allow them immediate emergency response capabilities. This not only ensures rapid action during crises but also provides a sense of security for students and staff.

With seasoned retired officers safeguarding the district’s elementary campuses, the program soon expanded. "These officers seamlessly integrate into school ecosystems, forging invaluable bonds with students, staff, and families," says Steve Logan, Chief Operating Officer for the district.

As districts grapple with the demands of Texas' House Bill 3, which mandates an armed officer presence, Burleson ISD proves to be a model worth emulating. Their approach not only addresses the security needs but also the heart of the community.

Brannan aptly captures the essence of their mission, emphasizing that these young students, society's "most vulnerable treasures," deserve utmost protection. With the dedication of these retired officers, Burleson ISD ensures they receive just that.
