CC EXCLUSIVE: Columbine Celebrates 7th Annual Day of Service

by Sara Graves

Roughly 1,200 students are expected to participate in 50 projects in today’s 7th annual Columbine Day of Service in Littleton, Colorado.

The event, started by former Columbine High School principal K.C. Somers, originally was created to rebuild the community in the wake of the Columbine tragedy. In 2019, on the 20th anniversary of the Columbine shooting, Governor Jared Polis declared that April 20th would be observed as a day of service and recommitment.

“What I do is every year by going to the library—the library that was there that day (on April 20, 1999) is no longer there—so we have the hope column by the Memorial Library—hope meaning the healing of people everywhere—and I invite the families back and I read the names and we...do a moment of silence...but we also include that day of service, so it's fantastic,” DeAngelis added.

Last year, the Day of Service generated over 60 projects in six states and 10 countries with more than 1,500 total participants.
